Rupp at 40, and two OTQs that will not count
Two runners hit Olympic Trials marks at Baystate and neither one counts, because the race had no USATF sanction. Plus Francesco Puppi misses the Templiers course record by a single second.
Races and results
Rupp's 2:06:55 at 40 now reads as a fifth Olympics bid
Galen Rupp's 2:06:55 at Chicago has turned into the start of a fifth Olympic team push, in a Jonathan Gault feature on how the 40 year old has adjusted his expectations. Gault calls it his best race in years and a US masters record, run after years of injuries.

Jeruto negative splits Toronto in 2:21:19, Kiptoo runs 2:08:08
Leah Jeruto won the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in a lifetime best 2:21:19 off halves of 70:55 and 70:24, 15 seconds clear of Nigsti Haftu. The men's race was still six runners inside a single second at 35K at sub-2:07 pace, and Wesley Kiptoo finished in 2:08:08. Dayna Pidhoresky took the Athletics Canada title in a personal best 2:26:02 at 39.
Puppi misses Templiers record by one second, Mlynarczyk breaks hers
Francesco Puppi won the 80.4K Grand Trail des Templiers in Millau, France in 6:32:20, one second outside Jonathon Albon's 2021 course record, iRunFar reports. He tracked leader Dimitri Morel-Jean for most of the day, then surged out of Massebiau and had a 5:15 gap by the top of Le Cade. Martyna Mlynarczyk led the women's race throughout and won in 7:41:18, under Caitlin Fielder's 7:42:24.
Shoes and fuel
Reviewers like the shoes, not the prices: Slowcush, Atmosfar, Race 3S
The ASICS Slowcush is a 48mm max cushion recovery shoe at $200, and kofuzi says that is too much for a shoe this narrow, putting it at $180. Believe in the Run graded the 51mm, 8.4 oz Craft Atmosfar ($190) an A for design, value and performance.

How they train
The carb ceiling: 100g an hour helps, 150 does not
Brady Holmer pulled three cycling studies together and found a ceiling: 100 grams of carbs an hour cut the late power drop to 6.4% from 9.3% at 60, but 90, 120 and 150 did not separate on capacity.
no reasonable evidence to support this other than, well, it’s what the best athletes on the planet advise

Baystate winners lose their Trials marks over a missing sanction
Spencer Friske (2:15:05) and Caitlin McGinley (2:36:09) won Baystate, but their marks will not count for the 2028 Olympic Trials because the race had no USATF sanction, David Monti says.
Debues-Stafford runs 31:37, ends a 37 year Canadian 10K record
Gabriella Debues-Stafford ran 31:37 at the Jarrow 10K in England, taking seven seconds off Lynn Williams's 1989 Athletics Canada record, per David Monti.
Frequently asked questions
Can Galen Rupp still qualify for the Olympics at 40?
Yes, Rupp is targeting the 2028 Olympics after running a 2:06:55 marathon at Chicago, which was a US masters record. He is framing this performance as the start of a fifth Olympic team push rather than a farewell to the sport.
What is the carb limit for endurance performance?
Research shows that 100 grams of carbohydrates per hour reduces late-race power loss, but higher amounts like 120 or 150 grams do not provide additional benefits. This suggests there is a ceiling to how much carbs can help during endurance efforts.
Why don't Baystate marathon winners count for Olympic Trials qualifying?
The Baystate race did not have USATF (United States Track and Field) sanction, which is required for times to count toward 2028 Olympic Trials qualifying standards.
When was Canada's 10K record last broken?
Gabriella Debues-Stafford broke the Canadian 10K record in 2026 with a time of 31:37, ending a 37-year-old record that had stood since 1989.
