He was not alone up front. Abednego Cheruiyot of Kenya took second in 2:07:53, also a personal best, and Moses Kipngetich Kemei was third in 2:08:04. That is three men inside 2:08:05 at a race that does not usually get the same attention as the autumn majors.
In the women's race, Ethiopia's Aberash Fayesa Robi won in 2:21:54, her own personal best. Her compatriot Nurit Ahmed Samiro was second in 2:25:03, and that was her marathon debut. Tecla Jelimo Kibet of Kenya rounded out the podium in 2:29:56.
A debut at 2:25:03
Samiro's run is the one worth a second look. A 2:25:03 first marathon puts a runner straight into the conversation at races like this one, and it came on a day when the woman ahead of her was setting a lifetime best.
The top two in each race both improved on their previous bests, which usually says something about conditions and about honest pacing rather than a single runaway effort. Lipschitz and Cheruiyot were separated by 32 seconds, and Cheruiyot and Kemei by 11.
What it means
Four PBs across two podiums is a good day for a race that sits outside the Marathon Majors. Nobody here threatened a world mark, and the sources do not claim anything beyond the results. What they do show is a deep men's front group and a fast women's debut.
The result drew notice beyond the finish line. Race journalist David Monti replied to the results post with a simple "Congratulations @adamlipschitz!"
Congratulations @adamlipschitz!
Full finishing times for both races are in the Marathon News post.
