Dorfel debuts in 2:20:46 at Frankfurt
Germany's Blanka Dorfel negative split her first marathon, closing in 1:10:17.
Blanka Dorfel ran 2:20:46 in her marathon debut at the Frankfurt Marathon, the second-fastest time ever by a German woman, according to David Monti.
she slightly dropped her pace to run the second half in 1:10:17 resulting in a finish time of 2:20:46, the second-fastest ever for a German woman
The way she did it is the part worth looking at. Dorfel came through halfway in 1:10:29, then ran the second half in 1:10:17. Monti describes that as slightly dropping her pace over the closing half, which is to say she got quicker when most debutants are slowing down.
Why a negative split on debut matters
A negative split, running the second half faster than the first, is rare over 26.2 miles and rarer still the first time somebody tries the distance. The standard debut story is a runner who guesses a touch high on early pace, feels fine at 30K, and then finds out what the last 10K does to a pair of legs that have never been there. Dorfel did the opposite. Twelve seconds is not a huge swing, but the direction is the message. She reached the finish with the race still under control.
That is also the reason not to read 2:20:46 as a ceiling. A debut run this evenly usually means the runner left something out there, and the honest read is that nobody knows yet how fast she can go, including her.
Where it sits on the German list
Second-fastest ever by a German woman is the headline number, and it lands on a first attempt. Monti did not name the national record holder or the record time, so the gap between Dorfel and the top of that list is not something these results tell us.
What we do know is that Frankfurt, a flat German course that has a long history of producing fast marathons, now has a new name near the top of its country's all-time list. Dorfel will get asked about a second marathon well before she has recovered from the first one.
