Boston 2027 cutoff is 5 minutes 17 seconds under the BQ
A record 25,630 runners are in for April 19, 2027, and for the first time 1,000 of the runners who missed get a lottery shot.
The B.A.A. has set the 2027 Boston Marathon cutoff at 5 minutes 17 seconds faster than the age group qualifying standard. A record 25,630 qualified applicants have been accepted or are in the process of being accepted, FloTrack reports, while 8,019 qualifiers who ran under their standard did not get in. The race is on April 19, 2027.
In practice that means an 18 to 34 year old man needed 2 hours 49 minutes 43 seconds, and women and nonbinary athletes in that age group needed 3 hours 19 minutes 43 seconds. CITIUS MAG posted the full adjusted standards chart, which is just each published BQ time with 5 minutes 17 seconds taken off.
The lottery is the new part
For the first time, 1,000 runners who ran a BQ but missed the cutoff are being randomly selected for entry through the Boston Qualifier Selection lottery, according to CITIUS MAG. Missing by seconds is still brutal, but it is no longer automatically the end of it. The overall field of 30,000 also includes charity runners, invited pros and Para athletes.

The field by the numbers
Of the accepted qualifiers, 13,898 are men, 10,641 are women and 91 are nonbinary. They come from 120 countries, all 50 states, D.C. and U.S. territories. Roughly 10,745 will be running Boston for the first time. The youngest accepted runner is 18 and the oldest is 84. Another 849 got in through 10 or more consecutive Bostons or B.A.A. Running Club status.
Where people actually got their times is the interesting slice. The 2026 Boston Marathon led by a wide margin with 4,448 qualifiers, ahead of the 2025 Chicago Marathon with 2,043, the 2025 New York City Marathon with 826, the 2025 California International Marathon with 812 and the 2026 London Marathon with 610. Boston feeding itself that heavily makes sense once you remember how many people run it and then immediately chase the next one.
The B.A.A. also flagged that 240 qualifying times came from races with a net downhill index, a detail it has not always broken out.
What it actually means for anyone training for a fall marathon right now. A qualifier is still not an entry. Plan around beating your standard by at least five and a half minutes, and treat anything closer than that as a lottery ticket rather than a spot.
