Mantz runs 2:07:27 in New York, finishes 11th

A time that would have been top 10 in New York history last year was only fourth American on Sunday.

Conner Mantz ran 2:07:27 at the New York City Marathon and finished 11th. LetsRun points out that the same time would have been the 10th fastest in New York history before this year. In 2026 it was not even the fastest American mark of the day.

Three US men beat him. Zuhar Talby ran 2:06:43 for sixth, Ahmed Muhammad 2:07:09 for eighth and Ryan Ford 2:07:17 for 10th. LetsRun calls Talby the top American marathoner right now, with sixth in New York, sixth in Boston and a win at the Houston Marathon in January.

How the race got away from Mantz

LetsRun says Mantz was leading at 35K, in a pack of 15 men all on roughly 2:07:16 pace. The last 7K was then covered at about 1:59 marathon pace, around 17 seconds a mile quicker than the stretch before it, and Mantz lost a minute and a half over that closing section. Andreas Almgren won the race on debut.

The depth numbers are the real story. LetsRun counts 24 American men under 2:10 in 2026, a record by a wide margin. Four years ago that figure was seven. Eight years ago it was one. Aiden Troutner ran 2:08:54 for 15th, which LetsRun says would have been the fastest ever by an American on the New York course before Sunday. Ford's 2:07:17 for 10th is more than three minutes quicker than the previous fastest 10th place in New York, Daniel Mucci's 2:10:40 in 2025.

What it actually means

LetsRun is not convinced this is all improvement. The channel credits super shoes, better fueling where runners do not blow up the way they once did, and perfect weather with no wind in New York. The counterweight is the result sheet at the sharp end. No American man has stood on a World Marathon Major podium since Galen Rupp at Chicago in 2021, a five year drought, and none of the four Americans in New York cracked the top five.

So the floor has risen fast and the ceiling has not moved. Twenty four men under 2:10 is a different country than one man under 2:10. It just does not get anyone a medal yet.
