Dawit Seare catches Ingebrigtsen in the last strides of World Road 5K

Ingebrigtsen led with 100m to go, then had nothing left, and finished flat on his back.

Eritrea's Dawit Seare ran down Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the final strides to win the men's 5K at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, 12:56 to 12:58.

Ingebrigtsen was still leading with 100m to go, according to LetsRun.com, and had no answer when Seare went. Jonathan Gault, who watched it live, said Ingebrigtsen hung back for most of the race and his win looked inevitable until that last 100m. Ian O'Riordan called it a mad finish and said Ingebrigtsen had it won before the Eritrean went past.

Ingebrigtsen was wrecked at the line

The detail that tells you how hard this one was raced is what happened after the tape. Gault said Ingebrigtsen was laid out on the ground for about 30 seconds once he crossed, something he described as rare for a runner who usually controls the closing metres himself.

That is the part people latched onto. Ingebrigtsen losing a kick is news on its own. Ingebrigtsen losing a kick and then being unable to stand up is a different kind of news, and it is what turned a two second margin into the headline of the day.

Farken outkicks Nuguse in the mile

The mile went to a teammate battle. On Athletics Club pair Robert Farken and Yared Nuguse went 1-2, with Farken winning in 3:51.80 to Nuguse's 3:52.33.

On the women's side, Agathe Guillemot took the mile in 4:22.74 and Likina Amebaw won the 5K in 14:41.

What it actually means

This was a road 5K at a championship, not a track final, so read the two second gap as a race result rather than a verdict on anyone's form. Seare beat the best closer in the sport at his own move, which is the thing nobody had managed on a day like this. Ingebrigtsen was second, and the way he finished suggests he emptied it.

Rare to see Ingebrigtsen so exhausted after a race.
