Hurley debuts in 2:20:47, fastest ever by an American
Seventh overall and top American in her first race at the distance, and already sixth on the US all-time list.
Emma Grace Hurley ran 2:20:47 at the 2026 Chicago Marathon in her first ever marathon, finishing seventh overall and first American.
That is the fastest marathon debut by an American woman. David Monti posted that the previous mark was Fiona O'Keeffe's 2:22:10 at the Olympic Trials in Orlando on February 3, 2024. Chris Chavez put the margin at 1 minute and 23 seconds and shared a chart of how the US women's debut record has moved over the last 25 years.
Not much help out there
CITIUS MAG says Hurley did a lot of solo running in Chicago, which matters for a debut. The usual story of a fast first marathon is a runner tucked into a big group that drags her through halfway. Hurley spent chunks of this one on her own and still came home under 2:21.
She arrived with form. CITIUS MAG points to her fifth place finish at the World Road Running Championships half marathon last month as the reason expectations were high going in, and says she handled the extra attention.
What it actually means
The debut record is the headline, but it is the smaller part of the result. One race put Hurley sixth on the US all-time list, according to CITIUS MAG, which is a different conversation than best first-timer. Debut records are a soft category, because plenty of strong American women have opened conservatively or run their first marathon at a championship with no pacers. All-time top ten is not soft.
It also means the American women's marathon depth chart changed in a single morning. A runner with zero marathons to her name on Saturday is now ahead of most of the field she will line up against for the next few years, and she did it on a day when she was the fastest American in the race by definition of finishing first among them.
The full CITIUS MAG recap of the race is here.
After her first crack at the distance, Hurley already sits at No. 6 on the U.S. all-time list.
