iRunFar review puts Hoka Rocket X Trail between road and trail

The review calls the hybrid category increasingly popular, and says the shoe fits it.

iRunFar has published an in-depth review of the Hoka Rocket X Trail, and the verdict in its review post is about category as much as cushioning. The site says the shoe succeeds by occupying what it calls the increasingly popular middle ground between road racing shoes and traditional trail racers.

That is the whole pitch of a hybrid racer. Not a stiff, smooth road super shoe that skates on dirt, and not a knobby trail racer that feels dead on the pavement sections of a mountain ultra. Something in between, for courses that are part road, part fire road, part singletrack.

What the post does not say

The review post does not give a price. It does not give a weight, a stack height (how much foam is under the foot), a lug depth or a plate description. If you want those numbers before you decide, the full review is the place to go, not the summary.

It also does not say the Rocket X Trail is the best shoe in that middle ground, or name the shoes it is competing against. The claim is narrower than that. iRunFar is saying the shoe does the job it set out to do, in a slice of the market the site describes as growing.

What it actually means

One reviewer, one verdict, and a positive one. Treat it as that rather than as a consensus. There is no second review in hand saying the same thing, and no racer feedback yet on how the shoe holds up over an ultra distance on technical ground.

The more useful line for most readers is the category note. A site that covers trail racing full time is calling the road and trail hybrid space increasingly popular, which tells you where brands think the next wave of race-day shoes is going. If your fall and spring races mix tarmac with dirt, that is the shelf worth watching.
