LA28 Olympic marathon cut to 70 spots per gender
The quota list closes six days before the US Olympic Marathon Trials in St. Louis.
World Athletics has laid out how runners qualify for the 2028 Olympic marathon in Los Angeles, and the field is smaller. There are 70 quota places per gender, down from 80 at Paris 2024, with a qualification window running Nov. 1, 2026 through April 30, 2028. Entry standards will be finalized after World Athletics Council approval in December.
About 40% of each field is meant to come from the entry standard, with the remaining 60% from World Rankings, CITIUS MAG reports. A top-five finish at a Platinum Label marathon inside the window also counts as hitting the standard. Hitting it does not guarantee a spot. If more athletes achieve the standard than there are places, the best performances take priority, which could leave nothing for rankings qualifiers. Each country can enter up to three athletes per gender.

The March 19 problem
On March 19, 2028, the top 55 athletes on the filtered "Road to LA" quota list are considered qualified and cannot be displaced. The last 15 spots get filled afterward on the same criteria. That cutoff lands six days before the US Olympic Marathon Trials on March 25 in St. Louis, as Chris Chavez and CITIUS MAG both flagged.
Reallocation is back. At final entries, a national Olympic committee can hand a quota place to an otherwise unqualified athlete who has run 2:11:00 or faster for men or 2:29:00 or faster for women inside the window.
Course rules matter too. A course needs a measurement certificate no more than five years old from a World Athletics or AIMS Grade A or B measurer. For the entry standard, net downhill drop cannot exceed one meter per kilometer, roughly 42 meters across a marathon. Steeper drops can still score World Rankings points, with deductions based on elevation loss.
What it actually means
The Trials still picks the three Americans, but most of the quota math happens before anyone lines up in St. Louis. McKirdy Trained reads the new order as unlock the spots for your country first, run under 2:11:00 or 2:29:00 on a valid course or sit ahead of the last person ranked 70th, then finish top three at the Trials. The coaching group also listed the US races it expects to be time eligible for reallocation, including Houston, Chicago, NYC, Grandma's, Twin Cities, Philadelphia and the 2028 Trials themselves.
