World Road Champs return, Hicks and Rudel earn 2027 US spots

Two global road championships in seven months after a three-year gap, and the US quietly picked part of its 2027 team at a national 20K.

The World Road Running Championships are back. Jonathan Gault says the 2026 edition runs next weekend in Copenhagen, with the 2027 champs going to Yangzhou, China. That is two global road championships inside seven months, after a three-year stretch with none.

The gap has an explanation. Gault says the event is meant to be annual going forward, but the 2025 championships, scheduled for San Diego, were cancelled.

New Haven was a selection race

Here is the part most people watching on Monday did not clock. Gault says the USATF 20K championships in New Haven doubled as the US half marathon selection event for the 2027 championships. Winners Charles Hicks and Rachael Rudel will be offered spots on next year's World Roads team.

Gault laid out the rest of the formula in replies. According to the selection procedure, one spot comes from the 20K champs, one goes to the highest US finisher at the 2026 World Half as long as that runner places in the top 15, and the remaining spots are filled from world rankings.

The timing complaint

The wrinkle is how late all of this landed. Gault says the selection document was published on August 11, which he points out did not leave athletes much runway to build a season around a race in New Haven. For a national championship that also hands out a world team spot, that is a short window to decide whether to show up sharp or skip it.

David Monti's wrap on the same race adds another odd detail. Monti says the race winner got no prize money, but second place did. He did not explain the setup beyond that line in his post, which linked his full story.

What it actually means

A world championship on the roads exists again, and the US has already started filling its 2027 roster at an event a lot of fans treated as a straight national 20K title. Hicks and Rudel get offers, not automatic starts, and the rest of the team depends on what happens in Copenhagen next weekend and where American runners sit in the world rankings after that.

The complaint here is not about who won. It is about process. A selection document published in mid August for a race in early September means athletes made their fall plans before they knew what was on the line, and the prize money quirk Monti flagged reinforces the sense that the race carried more weight than its presentation suggested.

After a 3-year gap without a World Road Running Champs, we will have two in the next seven months.

Selection document says it was published August 11. Not a lot of leadup time for athletes making race plans.
