AIU suspends 26:39 10K man Kibet, bans 2:18 marathoner Mesfin
Two road racers near the top of the sport, one case still open and one closed with an admission.
The Athletics Integrity Unit has provisionally suspended Uganda's Harbert Kibet for presence and use of triamcinolone acetonide and exogenous steroids confirmed by IRMS, a lab test that separates synthetic steroids from the ones a body makes itself. Provisional means he is sidelined while the case is decided, not that anything is settled.
The reason this one landed hard is the résumé. CITIUS MAG notes Kibet is 21, made his road 10K debut at the 10K Facsa Castellón in February and won in a world-leading 26:39, No. 4 on the all-time road 10K list. He raced the World Championships in Tokyo last year without getting out of the heats, and has not competed since a 15th place 13:46.45 in the 5000m at the Xiamen Diamond League in May. The @cleans_letsrun account added that he is coached by Moses Kipsiro and trains with Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo. Sage Canaday's reaction was three words.
Mesfin banned three years on her passport
A day later the AIU banned Ethiopia's Tiruye Mesfin for three years after she admitted a violation stemming from her Athlete Biological Passport, a long-term record of blood values used to spot doping without ever catching the drug. Per CITIUS MAG, the AIU built a profile from 17 blood samples collected between Dec. 2, 2022 and Nov. 28, 2025, and an independent expert panel unanimously flagged samples 13 through 16, taken between late June and late August 2025. The panel described a stimulation and suppression pattern, elevated hemoglobin alongside her lowest reticulocyte value across all 17 samples.
Mesfin ran 2:18:35 for third at the 2024 Valencia Marathon, was second at Hamburg in 2023 and ninth at Boston in 2024, and sits No. 31 on the Ethiopian all-time list. She took the standard one-year reduction off a four-year ban for admitting within 20 days of the charge. The ban runs Aug. 10, 2026 to Aug. 9, 2029, with results disqualified back to June 25, 2025. That wipes her third place at last year's Shanghai Marathon in 2:20:38 and her fifth at this year's Seoul Marathon in 2:20:45.
The week also included Kenya's Caren Chelagat, banned four years for norandrosterone. Canadian Running framed the run of news as two rising road race stars facing doping allegations in two days.
What it actually means. Kibet's case is open and undecided, so hold the verdict. Mesfin's is closed and admitted, and it is the one marathon fans should notice, because the passport caught her without a positive test and took back more than a year of results.
Their conclusion was that the pattern was highly likely to be caused by a supraphysiological increase in red cell mass, consistent with the use and then discontinuation of an EPO-type agent or a recent blood transfusion.
Steroids. Distance running. Yep.
