Pasadyn scratches from Chicago Marathon after being hit by a car
David Monti says the 2:35:17 marathoner was struck by a car while running and seriously injured.
Felicia Pasadyn is off the elite start list for the Chicago Marathon on October 11. Chris Chavez posted the updated field, and Pasadyn, with a 2:35:17 best, is listed among the scratches. Replying to that post, David Monti said Pasadyn was struck by a car while running and was seriously injured.
That is the part that turns a routine field update into news. Scratches usually mean a hamstring or a bad block. This one means an American marathoner loses a major start because a car hit her on a run.
Who else is out
The men's side lost three names. Alex Masai, the fastest of them at 2:04:37, is no longer racing, and neither are Zach Panning (2:09:16) or Jacob Thomson (2:09:51). Panning in particular was one of the American entries worth watching in Chicago.
Who is in
The additions are deep. Bashir Abdi of Belgium joins with a 2:03:36 best, and Sondre Moen of Norway comes in at 2:05:48. On the American men's side Chavez lists Matthew Richtman (2:07:57), Brian Shrader (2:09:46), Ben Rosa (2:09:47), Frank Lara (2:09:53), Nathan Martin (2:10:45), Patrick Cullen (2:12:15), Afeworki Zeru (2:13:22), Ethan Gregg (2:13:32) and Awet Beraki (2:14:13). Cole Sprout is in for his marathon debut.
The women's additions are Sara Vaughn (2:23:24) and Lexie Thompson (2:30:37).
What it actually means
The American depth in Chicago just got wider rather than faster. Abdi at 2:03:36 is the headline signing, and Sprout's debut is the one to watch for anyone tracking the next wave of US marathoners. But the story people will carry out of this update is Pasadyn, who is not racing because of something that happened on a training run, not on a start line.
