Monti reissues a corrected US all-time list from Chicago

The American results in Chicago ran deep enough that the record-keeping is still catching up.

David Monti posted a corrected version of the top times in history by American athletes at the Chicago Marathon, days after Sunday's race.

That is the tell. When a statistician has to reissue an all-time list, it is usually because the first pass could not keep up with how many fast American times landed on one morning.

What was in the race

The fast American day was no accident. Galen Rupp ran 2:06:55 at 40, and Emma Grace Hurley debuted in 2:20:47, the fastest ever by an American woman. Amos Kipruto won the race.

LetsRun's winners and losers piece landed the same day as Monti's correction and covered the same ground. It credits adidas with dominating the day, says Rupp turned back the clock, says Vinny Mauri inspired thousands, says Clayton Young proved the doubters wrong, and says Emma Grace Hurley toughed it out. Kipruto, in LetsRun's words, entered rare air.

The broadcast gets a loser slot

The one clear loser on LetsRun's list is not a runner. The site writes that the race broadcast cut away from history for a corporate sponsor interview. If you watched live and felt like you missed something, that is the complaint, and you were not alone in it.

What it actually means is simple. Nothing in the results changed, nobody got a time taken away, and nobody got a new one. The list of fastest American performances in Chicago history just needed another pass, which is what happens when a national-class field all runs well on the same course on the same day. The official record-keeping settles in the days after the finish line, not at it.

Monti's corrected list is on his account, and LetsRun's full winners and losers rundown goes through the race name by name.
