Ruti Aga suspended after 22 marathons and 15 podiums
The numbers behind the provisional suspension, plus the 2026 Sydney Marathon winner who says she got him into running.
The full shape of Ruti Aga's career is now attached to her case. Race statistician David Monti counted 22 career marathon starts for the Ethiopian, with six wins and 15 podium finishes, after the Athletics Integrity Unit provisionally suspended her for the presence and use of methylprednisolone, a corticosteroid, plus tampering.
The AIU says the 32-year-old won the 2019 Tokyo Marathon and has four more top-three finishes at the World Marathon Majors, in Berlin in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and New York in 2019. That is a decade at the front of big-city racing. Sage Canaday pushed the news out to his audience with the hashtags #cleansport and #doperssuck.
The Sydney connection
Aga's name also came up earlier this year in a very different context. According to @angasurunning, the winner of the 2026 Sydney Marathon, Addisu Gobena, credited his aunt Ruti Aga with putting him on the path to running at all.
"I wanted to be a bus driver, but my aunt, Ruti Aga, encouraged me to become a runner and supported me in every way," Gobena said in that post. He added that he still lives with her. Nothing in the sources connects Gobena to the AIU case, and he has not been charged with anything.

What it actually means
A provisional suspension is a hold, not a verdict. The AIU has not announced a finding and Aga has not commented in any of the posts covering the case. Her personal best is 2:18, per @angasurunning.
The detail worth watching is the second charge. Tampering sits next to the substance charge here, and those cases tend to run longer and get messier than a straight positive test, because the athlete has to answer for the conduct around the sample as well as what was in it. Until the AIU publishes an outcome, the only confirmed facts are the charges themselves and the record Monti laid out.
